“I AM BECAUSE WE ARE” is one of the translations of ubuntu, a Southern African philosophical concept of shared humanity. The idea is that the pain of one is the pain of all. If your child is sick, we will care for your child, because if your child is sick, we are all sick. In 2020, COVID is the great unifier and the great divider. Humanity is bruised—hence the purples, reds and browns in this piece. But bruises heal. We all need to care for each other so that we can heal together.
